How I spent my summer.

Summer is that time of the year when all the members of the family get together and have various celebrations. In India, its the season to meet your dur ke rishtedar (other relatives) whom you see once a year. Keeping aside the elderly relatives cousins are a relief to be around. You share with them whatever happened in the last one whole year within the few days of summer vacation. In simple words, family reunion is an essential part of summer holidays every year in almost every family around the world.

The story is almost the same at my place too but this year we decided to not follow the routine and do something out of the box. A trip to Europe was something that had been on our mind for the last couple of years and this year my family thought of making it finally happen. But for me what first comes to mind when I hear Europe is Switzerland because that’s exactly where Shah Rukh Khan proposed to Kajol in the 90s hit Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and thankfully that place was on our trip list. The dream was finally coming true.

“Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all of one’s lifetime.”

-Mark Twain

Travelling for me is exploring places unheard and unread about. This time my summer travel list included countries such as Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland and France in it. It was more than exciting for me. Germany, the heart of central Europe as we all know is famous for the Berlin wall, dark chocolates and many other things. When in Germany a visit to the town of Cochem would be my suggestion. Cochem is the second smallest district of Germany and has the most breathtaking scenery. The Cochem castle is one among the historical places in Germany and is a must-visit. Black-forest of Germany is known for its cuckoo clocks, the ones which we generally see in movies and that was one place that shall always be etched in my memory.

Amsterdam, the capital of Netherlands most famously known as the residential city of Anne Frank, one of the most discussed Jewish victims of Holocaust. Anne Frank was a young Jewish girl who lost her life for just being a Jewish by fate and she attained fame posthumously after the publication of the The Diary of a Young Girl, in which she documents her life in the hiding from 1942-1944 when Netherlands was occupied by the Germans in World War 2. Anne Frank House is the most visited place in Amsterdam which has now been turned into a museum. Amsterdam is also known as one of the most romantic cities in Europe. Canals of Amsterdam are not be forgotten about.

Italy is largely famous for its class, culture and cheese. The Gothic structures and art of Rome, beauty and romantic sensation of Venice, fashion capital Milan and the Renaissance treasures of Florence is something that caught my eyes and got frozen in my brain. Personally I liked Venice the most. Romance floats in the air of Venice and the gondola rides were the best part of my trip which reminded me of the one of the old Hindi songs “Do lafzon ki hai dil ki kahani” from the movie The Great Gambler.

Switzerland was my most awaited country because of the reasons mentioned above. Other than that Jungfrau also known as the top of Europe was one of its kind experience along with Mount Titlis. The best part about Mount Titlis was that it had a cut-out of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol from DDLJ. I know it sounds funny but only a Shahrukh Khan will understand what its like to be there. Except Shah Rukh Khan the snow capped mountains were transfixing.

Last but not the least, Paris which is usually associated with Eiffel Tower was my last stop and my one and only suggestion to everyone would be to enjoy the lighting of Paris at night. The city becomes something totally different at night. Its as if morning Paris is full of people but Paris at night is full of life.

Travelling runs in my blood and its one of the very few things that I enjoy wholeheartedly. Its my request to everyone that if you want to learn something then travel. This summer was special for me and maybe the next one will be for you. So without any hesitation wear your travel shoes and step outside to explore the world.
